Transportation and logistics player Werner Enterprises (NASDAQ: WERN) has a long way to go before it catches up with its peer companies. Werner is currently trading at around $20.70, which is close to its 52-week high. The company has a good chance of outperforming the market, and the stock is relatively volatile. The management quality is about average, and Werner’s EPS currently stands at close to 80 cents.

Werner is undervalued as per Sadif’s analysis, but so are nearly all its peers. Werner is overvalued compared to Heartland Express (NASDAQ: HTLD). Heartland also shows slightly better business growth and prospects than Werner, but loses out on management quality.

Transport sector stocks got pummeled this week, however the sector still holds promise.

Talking with CNBC, Lee Klaskow of Longbow Research said that the transport sector is expected to reap the benefits of improvement in general economy. He said that there are a number of good stocks in railroad and truck segment. Growth in GDP is also expected to provide impetus to this sector.

Lee Klaskow favored Union Pacific Corp. (NYSE: UNP) and CSX Corp. (NYSE: CSX) and Old Dominion Freight Line (NASDAQ: ODFL). Among the trucking stocks, He placed his bets on Knight Transportation (NYSE: KNX), Heartland Express Inc. (NASDAQ: HTLD) and Werner Enterprises (NASDAQ: WERN). He said that the transport sector has done a very good job of cost control and thus has good margins.

Analysts at Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS) have released a preview of 4Q09 for the Freight Transportation industry.

Analysts expect a mixed earnings reports from rails this quarter. The estimates for rails have been adjusted for fuel, traffic and macro trends. The key area of focus will be volume, productivity and pricing. Analysts expect a strong report from CSX Corporation (NYSE: CSX). Analysts have updated their United Parcel Services Inc. (NYSE: UPS) EPS estimate with the latest fuel prices and industry trends. Analysts expect 4Q09 results to outpace consensus with J. B. Hunt Transport Services Inc. (NASDAQ: JBHT), Werner Enterprises Inc. (NASDAQ: WERN) and Knight Transportation (NYSE: KNX) most likely to beat consensus estimates.
