EMC announced today a new higher-density configuration of its Clariion CX4 midrange storage array and Celerra NAS (network-attached storage) gateway device, offering twice the capacity of previous systems in half the floor space.

EMC said Monday that it plans to acquire GRC (governance, risk and compliance) vendor Archer Technologies for an undisclosed sum. The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter, and is likely on the smaller side, as EMC said it would not have a material impact on its fiscal 2010 revenue or earnings.

EMC announced delivery of its fully automated storage tiering (FAST) technology across its Symmetrix, Clariion and Celerra line of storage arrays. The technology will allow data volumes to be dynamically moved between tiers of storage, depending on business performance requirements.
EMC is extending its Avamar backup software to all parts of an enterprise's infrastructure with clients for PC and Mac desktops and laptops.
The software for automated backup and recovery, which EMC acquired by buying Avamar in 2006, already backs up the contents of corporate servers and uses deduplication to more efficiently store it. Avamar 5.0, available immediately, lets enterprises add the same backup capability to individual client systems and does not require a per-client license.
