The Week in Review: Consolidation in China Life Science Companies
Consolidation was a major theme last week in news from the life sciences companies of China. American Oriental Bioengineering (NYSE: AOB) took a 38% position in much smaller China Aoxing Pharmaceutical (OTCBB: CAXG); Bionet Corp of Taiwan will invest in Shanghai Genecore Biotechnologies Co., the China subsidiary of Taiwan-based Vita Genomics; Bio-Bridge Science will start a vaccine cell culture JV with JR Scientific; Asian Clinical Trials, the CRO subsidiary of an Indian biomedical company, will enter an alliance with VPSCRO, a CRO based in Beijing; AsiaPharm (SI: ASPH) in-licensed development-stage drugs from two Scottish biomedical companies; SciGen, Ltd. (ASX: SIE) bought the China rights to a Generex (NSDQ: GNBT) oral insulin spray product; Calypte Biomedical (OTCBB: CBMC) was granted SFDA approval for an oral HIV diagnostic test; and WuXi PharmaTech (NYSE: WX) endowed a professorship at Shanghai’s Tongji University. Calypte Awarded SFDA Approval of Oral HIV Diagnostic Test
Calypte Biomedical Corporation of Portland, OR received SFDA approval for its oral HIV diagnostic test, Aware™ HIV-1/2 OMT (oral fluid). The test delivers results in 20 minutes with an accuracy comparable to lab tests. Aware is the only rapid oral fluid test approved for use in China. The test is being positioned as an alternative HIV test for medical sites that do not have access to a lab. The test is effective in detecting HIV-1 and HIV-2. More details...

The Week in Review: China Biopharma Investing
China biopharma investing was the major theme in stories that appeared during the past week in ChinaBio® Today. In reptrospective reviews of 2007, China was the destination for $1.4 billion of US venture capital, 5% of the total. In China, $3.25 billion in venture capital was put to work by investors of all nationalities, including domestic ones, with bio/healthcare snagging $409 million of the total. Sinovac Biotech raised $9.75 million in a secondary offering; NovaMed closed a Series B round worth $13.8 million; and CRO PPD, Inc. will invest in a global central lab services facility in Beijing. Guest authors Dr. Charles C. Liu and Jeanne J. Liu continued their review of the new China patent rules and regulations. On the product development front, Renhuang Pharma, Inc. successfully produced lyophilized syringin powder, a powder injection intended to treat depression and fatigue; and Calypte Biomedical said its oral HIV diagnostic test passed the technical review part of the SFDA approval process. Calypte Oral HIV Test Nears SFDA Approval
Calypte Biomedical Corporation reported that its fast, oral HIV diagnostic test has passed the technical review part of the SFDA approval process for use in China. The Aware™ HIV-1/2 OMT, which tests for both HIV-1 and HIV-2, now has just one aspect of the approval process left before final approval: it must prove that it is in conformity with the regulations for products standards and labeling.
