SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) - If news publishers with the heft of News Corp. start seeking out alternatives to Google Inc.'s online search index, it could have an intangible, but potentially significant impact on the Mountain View, Calif.-based Internet giant.
Internet search giant Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) said it acquired closely held Teracent Corp., a 3-year-old startup, in an effort to boost sales of visual Web advertisements. Terms of the deal weren't disclosed.
Google started its move into advertising last year with its $3.2 billion purchase of DoubleClick. Google is also in the process of buying AdMob, a startup specializing in ads for mobile devices, for $750 million.
Google had $22 billion in cash as of the end of September.
Peet's Coffee & Tea (Nasdaq: PEET) raised its offer for the wholesale roaster and distributor Diedrich Coffee Inc. (Nasdaq: DDRX) by about 24% to $265 million. The new offer values Diedrich at $32 a share, $2 a competing bid from Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (Nasdaq: GMCR).
Under the terms of Peet's revised proposal, Peet's said it will pay $19.80 in cash and 0.321 of one share of Peet's common stock for each share of Diedrich common stock. Investors sent Diedrich shares higher by nearly 30%, indicating they favor the new proposal and that Peet's could raise its offer again.
The main investors in TDC say they’re considering strategic options for the Danish telecom firm amid speculation about a possible initial public offering.
Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) announced its acquired Teracent, saying its "technology has great potential to improve display advertising on the web."
Leading advertisers and agencies use Teracent's platform to exploit increasingly rich and granular audience data available to them, in order to optimize their display ad campaigns. In addition to working directly with advertisers and agencies, Teracent platform also powers ad campaigns for some of the biggest ad networks and data providers.
Earlier this week, Applied Materials (AMAT) announced that it was acquiring Semitool (SMTL) in a $364 million all-cash deal.
As we’ve footnoted before, Semitool had an interesting side-deal with CEO Ray Thompson that had the company leasing several planes and an aircraft hangar from separate companies owned or controlled by Thompson. Given Semitool’s size, the arrangement, which [...]
Fitch has a slightly more positive view than Standard & Poor’s of the prospects for US retailers and consumer products companies. We featured S&P’s outlook earlier this week, in which S&P said that industries that depend on discretionary consumer spending may not rebound anytime soon.
Fitch says it expects increased stability among retailers as cash flow [...]
Analysts are mostly skeptical about the likelihood of Hershey (HSY) and Ferrero mounting a successful joint bid for Cadbury (CBRY) to thwart Kraft’s (KFT) pending bid for the company. However, the threat of a rival bid may be enough to coax a slightly sweeter offer from Kraft.
Both Bloomberg and Reuters offer good summaries of analyst [...]
