FAP640: Reauthorization, GI Bill Benefits Denied, Free Stuff Friday, Black Lab
Student Financial Aid News
+ From the WTF department and
NASFAA: "When they came home from Iraq, 2,600 members of the Minnesota National Guard had been deployed longer than any other ground combat unit. The tour lasted 22 months and had been extended as part of President Bush's surge. And 1st Lt. Jon Anderson says he never expected to come home to this: A government refusing to pay education benefits he says he should have earned under the GI bill," reports NBC affiliate KARE from Minneapolis St Paul. "Here's what happened: Anderson's orders, and the orders of 1,161 other Minnesota guard members, were written for 729 days. Had they been written for 730 days - one day more - the soldiers would receive those benefits to pay for school... Anderson believes the Pentagon deliberately wrote orders for 729 days instead of 730. Now six of Minnesota's members of the House of Representatives have asked the Secretary of the Army to look into it. So have Senators Amy Klobuchar (D) and Norm Coleman (R)."
+ From
Inside Higher Ed: House Republicans introduce HEA legislation
+ Authorize a maximum Pell Grant of $6,000 and allow recipients to receive Pell Grants year-round.
+ Reduce interest rates for
parent PLUS loans and
graduate PLUS loans in the guaranteed student loan program to 7.9 percent, the same as the rate for such loans offered through the competing direct loan program, a change pushed by lenders to "level the playing field" in response to a change made by Congress (mistakenly) in 2005.
+ Eliminate what McKeon and Keller called the "untested" auction scheme that Congress enacted in budget reconciliation legislation, which the lawmakers said would "strip parent borrowers of the right to choose a lender."
+ Embrace a proposal that would require the education secretary to annually identify (and publicly embarrass) colleges that receive the most notices of copyright violations through "peer to peer" file sharing on campus networks.
+ Adopt a "single definition" of "institution of higher education" that would give for-profit colleges access to some pools of federal education money from which they are currently excluded.
+ Increase the limits on the amount of federal loans that a student can borrow, a proposal generally favored by private colleges but opposed by some advocates for students who worry about excessive debt burdens.
Scholarship Update
+ The Jeannette Rankin Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising funds for, and awarding scholarships to, low-income women, ages 35 and older. Each scholarship recipient has a vision of how a college education will benefit herself, her family, and her community. Most recipients are in truly meager financial circumstances and may have other hardships or disabilities.

Verify Photo ID tip from 9/19/06
+ Someone pointed out that with the ease and availability of fake IDs, it’s -easier- to commit fraud with this method than with a signature, and also runs counter to the Visa/Mastercard Cardholder and Merchant Agreements.
