FreebieList.com Sees Rise In Freeware Popularity

Popular UK freebies website freebielist.com has reported a 40% increase in free software downloads.

Free software downloads are on the increase as more people discover the benefits of saving money on commercial software, according to a popular free stuff website.

The trend observed by freebielist.com throughout 2011 highlighted a 40% increase in visits for free downloads, including those specifically for anti-virus, security, graphics, back-up, and disk cleaning tools.

Freeware - software free with no catches or evaluation periods - is fast becoming a viable alternative to commercially available software and comes without the added burden of a hefty price tag. Free licensing is especially useful for charities, schools and other companies wishing to save money on their expenses.

When budgets are tight, using freeware can be a smart move, says Andy Varley, founder of freebielist.com:

"Despite the enormous amount of free software available, many people still insist on purchasing programs. In many cases freeware is as good as, if not better than, commercial applications. And since freeware does not come with any price tag or restrictions, anybody can use it and make savings of up to £1000 and higher.

"It's astounding the amount of money organisations waste on commercial software so I urge schools, business, universities and the like to adopt freeware or open-source software as a more than adequate alternative."

Some of the most useful and popular downloads include free office packages, complete with word processor, spreadsheet and presentational software, freeware anti-virus tools, backup utilities, and even software to help your computer run as smoothly as possible. Even entire operating systems are available free of charge, so users no longer have to be bound by the more popular alternatives.

It is worth noting that while programs designated as 'freeware' are freely available without any restrictions, some free software is limited to personal use only. Users should refer to the individual licencing terms and conditions before downloading and implementing new software packages, particularly in office environments.
